Having a gratitude practice is a brilliant thing to do for yourself. When you start one, you find yourself noticing more things you are so glad to have in your life. You start noticing the little, simple things that can bring you joy when you notice them.
One good way to start a gratitude practice is to start a gratitude journal and list a few things you’re grateful for each day. It can just be a list of words or short phrases—nothing difficult or time-consuming. Do this every day for a month and see how it changes your perspective on your life. This simple act can help you shift your mindset to a glass-half-full, so you naturally feel blessed and happier every single day.
No matter how rough your day is, counting your blessings makes it better. Thinking about the things we are grateful for actually releases feel-good hormones that make us feel lighter and happier about where we are in our life.
There’s An App For That
Just as there will be busier times when you don’t have much-structured practice time for self-reflection or gratitude practice, there will be times when you do have spare time. Make the most of it by dedicating more time to your practice. It all evens out.
After a busy schedule, you’ll enjoy and appreciate it even more. At such times you may want to pay particular attention to patterns in your stress levels. What triggers stress for you? Do you unconsciously stay busy, so you don’t have to face getting to know yourself better? Are you productive or just doing stuff that doesn’t matter so that you can feel like your life is full?
The important thing is that you practice them both because they are good for you! When you know a busy time is coming up for you, consider checking out the self-reflection and gratitude apps available. Download one or more of those on your phone so you can easily practice no matter where you are.
